If you need someone to save the World, just dial 0800-Bruce-Willis, apparently

By Marianne Gray

It's a time for change for Bruce Willis. “I’ve had such a major run of good times saving the world with the Die Hard films and Armageddon and beyond,” he says. “Now I’m taking time off from saving the world to act in interesting movies and have some quiet moments."

"I don’t want to be there on the crutch of my trademark smirk although I’m not knocking it. I would go down the Die Hard route if I had to do it all over again because you can’t turn down a shot at films like that because it gives you exposure.

“Let’s face it, I built my career on the Die Hard films dating back to 1988. And, let’s face it, I built my voice’s career in the Look Who’s Talking films, which go back to 1989.”

Behind his shades, Willis is jaunty and down to earth. “I think I’m at a time in my career and my life when I’m far more interested in the acting side than running down the street yelling, ‘No, don’t do it!’ I really do not want to step into Die Hard’s John McLane’s shoes again unless there is such a great script I can’t resist it.

“In America it’s almost as though my name is now in the Yellow Pages under the World-Saver section,” he laughs. “It’s like I have an 0800 number and people just call me up. As soon as there’s a film where one man has to accomplish the impossible, they dial me.”

Bald and Sweaty

Willis jokes easily – about anything, about having made baldness a virility symbol, about how real men wear vests, sweaty vests. “Even as the unhip Harry Stamper, the world’s foremost deep core driller in Armageddon, I got to save the world again. But I also got to discover how demanding space flight is on the body from doing astronaut training in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab at Johnson Space Center. I believe Ben [Affleck] and I were the first civilians allowed into their buoyancy tank wearing an astronaut suit... It’s great to work and to learn.”

Burn Hollywood Burn

He says he learned lots, too, from Bonfire of the Vanities in which he plays a tabloid scavenger, Peter Fallow, in Brian da Palma’s version of Tom Wolfe’s novel. “I chose to play him as inherently evil, a man who, when he’s confronted with a choice, chooses to lie about another human being, prints it and calls it the truth.

“I’m not an art snob. I like action films as much as love stories as much as dramas like Sam Shepard or Tennessee Williams. I love acting and I love the escapism of it. But now I would much rather play something new to me than something derivative.

“That really hit home when I went to a screening of Mercury Rising and afterward my younger brother turned to me and said ‘Every action sequence in that was derivative of three other films you’ve already done’. And he was right. There’s just been too many of them done. That’s why I’m gunning for less action, more acting.

But Seriously

“After my run of high action flicks, it might take a bit of suspended disbelief to think of me in a serious role. But, hell, sit back and give a bloke a chance. How many times has a guy got to save the world before he can do something new?

“It used to bother me that I was boxed in by my action image but then I had a lot of success with Pulp Fiction and Nobody’s Fool and my image didn’t make any difference to the way people perceived those films. I think I crossed some kind of barrier with that work and now I can do films like 12 Monkeys and Sixth Sense. I’ll leave Hamlet to Mel Gibson, though!”
