The great and the good of Doctor Who convened in Cardiff’s Millennium Centre on 28th March for the launch of Doctor Who Season Two. While the cast and crew of the series nibbled canapés and mingled with the press, stars David Tennant and Billie Piper took time out to discuss the making of the series…
What’s it like working together? BILLIE PIPER Fortunately we get along. We have had a laugh – and you need to, really, because it’s nine months and it’s quite intense and they’re shooting 13-hour days, and you’re thrown together all the time. I feel like I’ve made a friend for life… DAVID TENNANT It’s weird, ’cause we’re the only two constants. Usually on a drama there’s a bunch of you who go through the whole thing together; Billie’s the only person I know I’m going to see every day.
How is Rose’s character going to develop this season? BP She’s 20 this year, and she’s come on leaps and bounds since the first series. She’s a lot more proactive, and she saves the day quite a few times; it’s just a natural progression, really. DT Rose’s family are a big key to the whole of the second season, actually. BP It’s quite domestic this season; it’s as domestic if not more so than last year round. And also, we get to travel with Mickey as well, which throws the dynamic into a different place.
What was it like playing the very different Rose that appears in New Earth? BP Actually, I was quite nervous, ’cause it was quite a departure from Rose and it was the first time in Doctor Who where I played quite a lot of comedy. So I was quite scared, but also very excited – and I think it works okay! It was fun… and I hope to play more posh bad girls…
