News: Nigel KnealeNigel Kneale 1924-2006
Legendary writer dies |
We’ve just heard the sad news that Nigel Kneale, the pioneering writer whose work has been an inspiration to Science Fiction and television writers for five decades, has died aged 84.
Kneale pioneered the writing of original drama for television with his ground-breaking scripts for The Quatermass Experiment, transmitted live in 1953, and also broke boundaries when the same team adapted George Orwell’s 1984 into a live play that proved to be highly controversial. Though he was often wary of his supposed legacy, and would vehemently insist that he wrote about people, not science, his work was frequently quoted as having the perfect mix of innovative thinking and strong characterization that true Science Fiction should embody, and never-more-so than in his 1968 play, The Year of the Sex Olympics, a cautionary tale that predicted the development of Reality television. He will be sorely missed. TV Zone issue 210 will pay an in-depth tribute to Nigel Kneale
