We had tremendous fun sifting through replies to this section, finding out readers’ favourite television series of all time. Anyone expecting to find 100 Science Fiction shows making up the final chart may be surprised – clearly TV Zone readers have a wide taste!

It’s interesting to find former TV Zone favourites such as Sliders, Millennium, Seven Days, Mutant X and First Wave missing the list altogether, while the likes of Open All Hours, Dynasty and Sharpe take up places in the countdown.

A word of explanation on the scoring system: each series was allocated a number of points depending on where each voter had the show on his of her form. One option was to allocate 10 points to a series for every first place it was given, 9 points for a second place, and so on. However, that system would result in one madman’s vote for, say, Triangle in first place would have counted for the same as 10 people voting for Red Dwarf in 10th place. We wanted the fact that many people voted for something to be reflected in the chart, so the points system was adapted to 40 points for a first place, 35 for a second place, 31 for a third place, and so on down to 21 points for a tenth place. It made the calculations nightmarish, but we think it makes the end result rather more accurate!
