Take Exorcise
Mark Kermode mounts his William Friedkin retrospective at the NFT (London) in October. Highlights include an uncut print of Cruising and Kermode’s lecture with Friedkin on October 22. The season ties in with the reissue of The Exorcist in England on October 31. Mark has also written the introduction to the new Faber screenplay book, which doubles the Exorcist shooting script with William Peter Blatty’s Legion script that became Exorcist 3.

New Haunting

After years of Wes Craven trying to direct a remake of Robert Wise’s 1963 classic The Haunting, Jan De Bont has finally landed the job for Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks. Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House, the movie is planned for a Christmas 1999 release. The original scare classic starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn, but no cast has yet been announced for the new version from the Speed and Twister director. Words cannot express what a misguided idea this is.

Breakdown
Vincenzo Natali, director of the Canadian cult hit Cube, will helm Brian King’s script Breakdown in Evandale. Described as ‘a paranoid suburban nightmare with a Twilight Zone twist’ it involves a man recovering from a nervous breakdown who moves to a weird community. King used to be a reader at New Line Cinema.

Hammer Zone
Hammer Films have collaborated with Abrams/Gentile for The Hammer Horror Zone, an animated series based on the classic Horror movies. Promised to be ‘thrilling and sophisticated’, the series offers an ‘all new animated retelling of classic tales of Fantasy, Horror and suspense that have made the Hammer named feared and revered.’ The pre-production artwork is faithful to the Hammer look, and given the success of the animated Batman and Spawn spin-offs, this may well be something to watch. On the other hand, Hammer’s revival projects seldom turn out for the best. Could this possibly be the final nail in the coffin?
